Fluoride: Let’s debunk the myths
Fluoride is a mineral that is often considered a miracle mineral in dentistry. This is because of its protective and strengthening action on the teeth. You must have seen ads that boast about how much fluoride they have in the toothpaste. However, even though fluoride has been a part of dentistry for a long time, certain myths go about fluorides. So, through the blog, we will debunk some of the myths about fluoride.
Myth: Drinking fluoride-containing water leads to fluorosis.
Fact: Fluorosis occurs when a person takes very high amounts of fluoride, which rarely happens. In the United States, the amount of fluoride added to the water cannot lead to fluoride in usual cases.
Myth: Fluoride water and treatment are harmful to children.
Fact: Fluoride, when used as intended, is not harmful but beneficial. It prevents dental decay by making the teeth strong and resistant to dental cavities. It prevents future tooth loss and ensures proper development.
Myth: Fluoridated water is expensive.
Fact: Adding fluoride to the water is one of the cheapest ways to prevent tooth decay; that’s why so many countries have national programs to ensure proper fluoride content in drinking water. It is much cheaper to drink fluoride-containing water than to treat dental decay in the U.S.
Myth: Fluoride causes cancer.
Fact: Numerous studies and research have now shown that the addition of fluoride does not increase the risk of cancer or other serious health problems.
Myth: Fluoridated water does not have an impact on tooth decay.
Fact: There are countless studies conducted in the U.S. and around the world that concretely prove the protective and strengthening effects of fluoride on teeth. Fluoride prevents dental decay by making the tooth resistant to bacterial acid attacks.
